The Absence of a Privacy Infrastructure Can Be Costly

A simple search of the Internet of privacy incidents in the news will provide several examples where companies have been fined or embarrassed because of privacy issues. The cost of not formalizing and enforcing a set of privacy policies can be pretty high. One of the most famous legal cases concerning online privacy occurred when DoubleClick was accused of tracking the browsing habits of millions of people without their knowledge or consent. DoubleClick was fined nearly $2 million dollars and suffered additional costs fighting the class-action suits and revamping their online service to comply with the final judgment.[1]
