Data Obfuscation

Obfuscation is a means for concealing data by hiding it. The difference between obfuscation and encryption is that obfuscation typically employs a simple and insecure mechanism that does not produce a performance burden on the database. Although this may not be a hindrance for a sophisticated hacker with plenty of time to browse through a small database, it can be enough of a barrier for a database with dozens of tables to convince a malicious person to find an easier target. Obfuscation should not be used in the place of a more secure mechanism where possible.[7]
