Deploying Artifacts with Octopus
Let’s start this section with some background. Imagine you have a web application, and you need to deploy it to test, staging, and production environments. How do you deploy your application today? Most people are using one or more of the following solutions:
- The application is copied to a USB drive or DVD and given to a system administrator, who copies all files to the target machine.
- The web application is built on one of the developer’s machines. That developer connects to the target server using FTP, Remote Desktop, or a file share and copies over all files, either manually or using a batch file.
- A batch script runs on the build server and copies all files to the target machine.
