Backup Planning and Preparation
The first step in backup planning and preparation is knowing when to start. The answer is quite simple: when your SharePoint farm goes beyond the point where it will take longer to recreate the farm and its content from scratch than to restore it from a backup. You will find that to be as soon as users start to use it. The uses can be testing or proof of concept but you have to start creating backups from the very beginning because it will be less painful than starting again with a brand new, empty server.
