Metadata
Metadata is largely defined as data about data. If you were storing a Word document on a file share, typical metadata would include the file name, date modified, type, and size. While this data is definitely of value, SharePoint provides the ability to further describe the content through the use of custom metadata. These custom fields can be grouped together to define a content type, or a useable collection of data for a specific type of information. Content types can also be utilized to define information management policies, workflow, or standard templates.
