In WPF applications, there are two very different ingredients that are both described as resources:
An assembly resource is a chunk of binary data that's embedded in your compiled assembly. You can use an assembly resource to make sure your application has an image or sound file it needs.
An object resource is a .NET object that you want to define in one place and use in several others. Although an object resource can be created in code, it's usually defined in XAML markup. This type of resource saves repetitive coding and allows you to store information (such as your application's color scheme) in a central place so it can be modified easily. Object resources are also the basis for reusing WPF styles.
