Problem-solving techniques/tools can be divided into four categories:

  1. Those used to improve the creativity and/or to enhance the problem identification and problem-solving skills of the individual
  2. General techniques used to improve the creativity and/or to enhance the problem identification and problem-solving ability of groups
  3. Systems-oriented techniques used to work with problem networks or “messes” (as systems scientists call them)
  4. Tools used specifically to measure productivity

In this chapter, we shall identify a comprehensive cross-section of techniques/tools in all four categories, describe how they work, and judge their effectiveness.
