Most of the elements of a video have very short lives. Camera shots, visual effects and audio edits don't last more than a few seconds at best. The mix is one of the few places where you can approach a project as a continuous whole.
A good mix can fix less-than-perfect elements and mask awkward edits. But no matter how good your individual tracks are, they won't survive a bad mix.
