The great philosopher Socrates is well known to have said “awareness of ignorance is the beginning of wisdom.”
Philosophically, Socrates’ dictum can be understood as an articulation of intellectual humility, a recognition that the scope of what one does not know far exceeds what one does. This acknowledgment of ignorance is not a defeatist perspective but rather a starting point for genuine inquiry. Socrates famously claimed that he was wise not because he knew much, but because he understood the extent of his own ignorance.
