Unbeknownst to many customers, BizTalk has a key dependency on Enterprise Single Sign-On (ESSO); this is because there are two uses of ESSO. The first use is to store encrypted user credentials, which can then be transmitted to various systems. Most heterogeneous environments require different credentials to access different systems, often meaning that users have to remember multiple credentials for different systems. This can have negative effects, such as users using simple passwords for systems or even using the same password for all of them and never changing it. This is likely to introduce security vulnerabilities in your system. With ESSO, the credentials are stored securely in the encrypted Single Sign-On (SSODB) database, meaning that users do not have to remember separate credentials for each application they use. This is the most common interpretation of how BizTalk uses ESSO.

However, ESSO is also used to securely store send port and receive location configuration information for BizTalk. Because the information contained in the configuration of these items (URLs, file drop locations, etc.) is often confidential, it needs to be stored safely and securely. This means that the BizTalk service requires access to the ESSO service in order to be able to access this configuration information and, hence, send and receive messages. The SSODB can also be used to store your application configuration data (see Chapters 12 and 13). Therefore, it ...
