10.3. Measuring Latency

Exactly what constitutes latency will often vary from scenario to scenario. For some scenarios, the latency measure starts when the sending application sends the message and ends when it receives the response. In other words, the time spent on the wire is included in the latency time. For transports that use queuing technology, for example, this could be more significant than, say, a direct TCP/IP transport. Yet, at the other end of the spectrum, the time spent in the adapter is not included. It is acceptable to start measuring at the time when the message reaches the receive pipeline since this period of time may typically be measured in a few milliseconds and is therefore of little interest in the big picture. Of course, this depends on the adapter that you are using.

Out of the box, BizTalk publishes a number of performance counters that you can use to help determine the amount of time messages spend in the BizTalk Engine. None of these counters gives the full latency picture, although the Request-Response Latency counter is pretty close. Nevertheless, they are all useful performance counters of which you should be aware.

The following table illustrates the four performance counters published by the Messaging Engine. All these counters are new in BizTalk Server 2006. The counters Inbound Latency and Outbound Latency measure the time taken in the Messaging Engine between the adapter (receive or send) and the MessageBox. Note, however, that these counters ...
