Backups and Database Maintenance

The Data.fs file that contains the ZODB when using the default FileStorage back-end is append-only. This means that the file will not shrink, even as objects are deleted, until it is packed. This brings some performance benefits, and also makes it possible to roll the database back to a previous version via the Undo tab in the ZMI—at least if there have not been too many complex changes.

The ZODB can be packed in the Control_Panel in the ZMI. This functionality is also exposed in the Maintenance control panel under Site Setup in Plone.
