Abstract:

This chapter provides an overview of cord blood stem cell technology beginning with an historical perspective of the development of the technology in the treatment of haematological disease. This is then followed by a description of current cord blood collection, processing and storage techniques and a discussion of the pros and cons of both private and public cord blood banking. The state-of-the-art use of cord blood as a source of stem cells in the treatment of haematological disease is then discussed, followed by current concepts in the use of cord blood mesenchymal stem cells in regenerative medicine.
