Abstract:
Scientific views of heart tissue biology in normal and pathological conditions have changed over recent years. This chapter describes the current concept of cardiac tissue homeostasis and summarizes the latest hypotheses and findings regarding cardiac stem/ progenitor cell origin, phenotype, and contribution to myocardial regeneration. It then discusses the possible cardiac stem cell-based methods of myocardial repair applicable in the therapy of heart failure and highlights the latest clinical trials.
