WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO DO
at seems like a good working denition, but it leaves out the how. And it
is simplistic on the “what.” An eective program manager (PM) may have a
great understanding of the strategic goals of his or her program, of course.
But the tactical ones, the way that things must happen in order to get to the
strategic goal, are oen beyond his or her expertise. So, eective program
leadership is not getting people to do what you want them to do; it is getting
