The Unified Communications Platform
UC is a software-based platform. Integrated with Active Directory Domain Services, this platform provides a unified view of the user’s identity, presence, and inbox. All means of communications with the user evolve around this single identity and inbox. Users are not interested in remembering a long list of phone numbers (work, cell, and so on), IM handles (one for each public IM provider), or e-mail addresses to reach a contact. With Exchange Server and Office Communications Server, enterprises can create a standardized e-mail, IM address, and phone number for every user. This is illustrated in Figure 1-1.
