13.3.3 Morphological Image Processing
Morphology refers to structure or form of something. In the context of image processing, mor-
phology (rather mathematical morphology) refers to extracting “meaning” from an image by
extracting image components which describe and represent a region shape. Dilation, erosion,
opening, and closing are common morphological operations on images.
Dilation
Dilation is a morphological operation on a binary image which thickens white objects in the
image. A binary image consists of black(0) and white(1) pixels only.
