Chapter 9. Geospatial Data Types

Leonard Lobel

Geospatial support is a powerful new extension to the core database engine in Microsoft SQL Server 2008. Also referred to simply as spatial, this feature allows you to store and manipulate shapes, sizes, and locations using the new geometry and geography data types and to calculate areas, distances, and intersections over that spatial data. These capabilities enable location awareness for applications in which geographic data can be processed at the database level. In this chapter, we explore the concepts behind spatial data and how this new support in SQL Server 2008 can be used to integrate location intelligence into your database applications.
