Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) is the chosen future platform for Windows desktop development. This might sound extreme, but WPF renders Windows Forms effectively obsolete. Moreover, WPF is not simply another forms package, and the transition from Windows Forms to WPF is much more disruptive and abrupt than was the switch from, say, Visual Basic 6.0 to Windows Forms.
