The Toolbox Menu Hierarchy
These menus are available at the top of the floating toolbox. A few of the options have equivalent menus associated with the image window, such as New or Open from the File menu. The commands accessible from these menus generally create new images or perform administrative functions such as setting user preferences or starting services. Typically these menus are referred to by the notation <Toolbox> → menu → submenu.
The File Menu
- New
Start a new image. Dialog allows you to specify a new width and height and the initial background color.
- Open
Open an existing image.
- About
Brings up a dialog box with a scrolling message bar featuring the names of all the Gimp developers.
- Preferences
Provides a dialog box that gives access to the user’s preferences for the display, user interface, memory usage, and default colormap settings, and the paths to Gimp resources such as plug-ins, palettes, and gradients. This information is stored in the
.gimprc
file in the.gimp
subdirectory of the user’shome
directory.- Tip of the Day
Brings up a dialog box with a “tip of the day.” This box also pops up when the Gimp is first started.
- Dialogs
This menu provides access to the Gimp’s dialog boxes. There are five:
- Brushes
Select a brush from the brush collection, or set the paint mode, opacity and spacing of a brush.
- Patterns
Select a pattern from the pattern collection to be used by the fill tools or other tools that use patterns.
