In the presence of traffic dynamicity, dynamic connectivity control and management allows fitting the allocated capacity resources with the actual traffic bitrate requirements. Mature wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical technology enables dynamic (online) provisioning of point‐to‐point (p2p) transparent optical connections. However, the algorithms developed for WDM cannot be used in elastic optical networks (EONs) because of the spectrum contiguity constraint. In this chapter, we present basic algorithms for dynamic p2p connection provisioning in EONs and extend their scope to deal with modulation formats, as well as propose new algorithms for spectrum adaptation. Finally, when the transparent transmission is not always possible due to reach limitations, impairment‐aware provisioning is proposed to guarantee a target Quality of Transmission (QoT) in translucent optical networks.
