If you are an experienced software developer, you probably wonder why you need a process. After all, you have written many programs and know what to do. How can a process help? A process can help in several ways.

First, most of us would like to improve the way we do our jobs. To do this, however, we must know how we work and where we could do better. Just like Maurice Greene, the runner described in Chapter 1, there is a big difference between generally knowing what you do and having a precisely defined and measured process.
