Epilogue

What is it about human beings that makes us so eager to have someone else tell us what to do? Consider the unfortunate lorry driver Steven Abbot, who had to spend his son’s 18th birthday in the cab of a 17.5 tonne lorry he had managed to wedge between two walls. Or the cabbie (not, one suspects, the owner of a particularly awesome hippocampus)1 who drove 180 metres up a river before the muddy riverbed brought his taxi to an ignominious halt. Or the Belgian truck driver who caused £20,000 of damage after panicking in a cul-de-sac, ploughing over a mini-roundabout, and taking out six other vehicles in the process.

What each of these tales has in common is that the drivers concerned all subsequently blamed their satellite navigation systems ...
