Abstract:

Although India has a long and rich history of libraries in general, India did not see much that resembled a true public library until the British imported the idea of a subscription library in the nineteenth century. In the early twentieth century, S.R. Ranganathan began his legendary work towards establishing public libraries in India like those he saw when visiting the United Kingdom. Under the national constitution adopted in 1950, public libraries are the responsibility of individual states in India, although to date not all have taken advantage of their authority to create them.
