The meditation bell rang. Three Buddhist nuns and two monks wearing saffron-colored robes closed their eyes and focused on their breath. Five men in heavy work boots shifted uncomfortably in their seats. It was the kickoff construction meeting for a new nunnery at a Buddhist monastery in San Diego, a project poised to embrace a more collaborative and empathetic method of building.
