QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, and Data Conversion

You can import almost all data in a QuickBooks Desktop company into QuickBooks Online. There is mostly a one-to-one relationship between Desktop and Online, but there are features in both Desktop and Online that don’t exist in the other platform. This appendix gives you a sense of what to expect if you migrate a QuickBooks Desktop company to QuickBooks Online.

Remember For best results, you should be using QuickBooks Desktop 2016 or later. If your version of QuickBooks Desktop is older, download a free 30-day trial version of the latest edition here: https://community.intuit.com/articles/1207255-quickbooks-desktop-trial-links. Install the trial version alongside your existing version of QuickBooks Desktop. Don’t let QuickBooks overwrite your existing installation. Further, don’t register or activate the free trial, because doing so could lock you out of your QuickBooks Desktop company. Use the trial version to convert your company data before you attempt to import it into QuickBooks Online, as shown in Chapter 14. Following these steps will allow you refer to your data if necessary. The QuickBooks Pro trial also works for QuickBooks Premier Desktop companies.

What Doesn’t Import

Most of your information from QuickBooks Desktop will migrate into QuickBooks Online. Table A-1 lists what won’t import.
