He has been instrumental in the development of the group, which has one of the largest market capitalisations in the Indian stock markets. Tata Motors developed the Indica in 1998 and then a decade later the Nano, which could be affordable for the lower middle class Indian family. Tata Group bought Corus, the steel manufacturers. It also owns a huge hotel group and bought Jaguar Land Rover,Tetley Tea and other big household names outside India.
