Chapter Nine: Nursing
Nursing enjoys high status in the UK. After demanding professional training, nurses specialise and their expertise relieves doctors of many tasks which are routinely performed by doctors in many other countries.
Nurses are often in close and regular contact with patients and are well positioned to provide sympathetic human contact as well as physical care. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of this when patients are stressed or anxious. Some people find it easier to talk to a nurse than a doctor, who may appear to be aloof, forbidding or very short of time.
