Chapter Eleven: Governance and training
The General Medical Council (‘GMC’)
This body is governed by Statute and regulates the entirety of the medical profession, i.e. everyone entitled to practise as a doctor, including surgeons. A doctor must be licensed to practice. This involves annual registration, a commitment to undertake a programme of continuing training and submission to the profession’s ethical and disciplinary system.
Medical students are under the supervision of the medical school to which they are attached, which assumes responsibility for their actions. Retired doctors can retain the title “Doctor” but must not practise as such without regaining their licence.
