How it works...

Invoking the function appropriate for the graphics device, such as postscript() and pdf(), opens the file for output. The actual plotting operation writes to the device (file), and the dev.off() function closes the device (file).

The best practice is to create a script file that begins with a call to the device driver (postscript, .pdf, .jpeg, or .png), runs the graphics commands, and then finishes with a call to dev.off().
