The previous three chapters have made a strong case for the importance of thinking hard about what you want to say, to whom, and why. Three chapters may seem a lot, but it’s impossible to overstate the importance of understanding both yourself and your audience. Whether you call this topic critical thinking, analytical thinking, or something else, it’s essential to writing. In fact, chief audit executives “indicate that analytical/critical thinking and communication skills are the most important” for their teams.1 They won’t be the only ones thinking this. Whichever sector, organization, or activity you work in, reporting requires rigorous thinking and clear communication.
