The Difference Radically Human-Centered Design Makes

In 2015, NASA announced a zero-g coffee cup designed so astronauts could smell the coffee they’re drinking rather than just sipping scent-free from a pouch with a straw. The new design is a clear plastic vessel that looks a little like a boot with a spout that doesn’t form a full tube so that it’s open along its length at the top. This way, when an astronaut slurps through the spout, the coffee, adhering to the edges of the cup and being pulled toward the astronaut’s mouth, is exposed to air where volatile molecules that carry that wake-you-up smell pass close enough to the nose so that the astronaut can catch a whiff.1
