A novice ATU

Introduction

Having an aerial tuning unit (ATU) is always useful. It is used for adjusting the aerial impedance, as ‘seen’ by the transceiver, to be the same as that of the transceiver itself, usually 50 Ω. This process is called matching, and ensures that the receiver and the power amplifier (PA) stage of the transmitter work efficiently.

This design is due to the late Doug DeMaw, W1FB, and uses readily available components. It will handle up to about 5 W, and operates over the frequency range 1.8 to 30 MHz.
