LIKE AUDIO, visual data is a major media type in multimedia computing. In response to the need in multimedia applications, especially in digital libraries, where efficient image indexing and access tools are essential, substantial research efforts have been devoted to the problem of efficient and effective retrieval of vast amounts of image data.
