Which comes first—community or curation? Curation itself is often a collaborative, community-based activity. Aside from those who curate (or aggregate) primarily as a personal archive, most curation is done with the intent of interaction. The analysis of a curated item is likely to start a conversation, and a series of conversations, around a curated topic that will begin to resemble a loose community. Clay Shirky captured this well, noting, “Curation comes up when people realize that it isn’t just about information seeking, it’s also about synchronizing a community” (Rosenbaum 2010).
