The Simple Object Access Protocol is a de facto standard for cross-platform messaging and RPC that can be used over a variety of transport protocols of which HTTP is the most common. You can think of SOAP as the Internet's application-to-application protocol enabling applications to communicate over the existing Internet infrastructure.
