Making Sense of Reality

Some have argued that every reality television program should be immediately preceded by the obligatory disclaimer, “Don’t try this at home.” However, it wouldn’t be altogether clear if such a warning would apply to the particular content of the program or to the general idea of producing reality television. As we’ve seen, either could prove remarkably perilous.

Having been wholly seduced by the wiles of television’s hottest industry, I have appreciated my past and present experiences in reality television. And although I have always sought to encourage up- and-coming reality show producers and performers to embrace the medium, it’s equally important to concede that the business is not for everyone. ...
