If there is one single aspect of REAPER that lifts it way above the pack, it is the program’s routing and channel-splitting capabilities. In this chapter we will cover the essentials of channel splitting and routing. We’ll also look in more depth at channel splitting in Chapter 11, “REAPER Audio FX Plug-In Power”, after we have examined some of the FX plug-ins that can take advantage of this phenomenon.
We’ll begin with a summary review of the basic concepts of routing that you will find are fairly common to most DAW software, often with variations in their implementation. Then the rest of this chapter will explore the many routing capabilities that are pretty much unique to REAPER.
