Appendix AValues document

We divided our document into three areas:

  1. vision
  2. values
  3. culture.

Our first vision was ‘Every woman can have the perfect pair of shoes'.

 Our first values were:

  • Passionately create happiness.
  • Our primary goal is to make our customers and each other happy.
  • We do work that challenges us, helps us master new skills, and makes the people around us happy.
  • We all create an environment where we ‘want to' come to work rather than ‘have to' come to work.
  • We're passionate about the work we do, and we celebrate wins.
  • We should prefer decisions that maximise happiness (e.g. refunding with a smile, even if the customer is difficult, but politely firing customers who consistently behave poorly).

We explained a little more what we meant by our concept of ‘passionately creating happiness':

  • Creating lasting happiness is really difficult, and is hard work. 
  • Superficial happiness isn't happiness.

And we defined how we as a team would execute on this:

  • Laziness doesn't create happiness. Selflessness does.
  • The people around us can make us happy (or unhappy), but we also have the responsibility of making ourselves happy.
  • The single most important thing to creating happiness is a positive attitude.

We defined what constituted constructive, thoughtful communication:

  • We don't complain about problems, we brainstorm solutions.
  • We all know how to use Google, but we're not shy about asking for help when we're really stuck too.
  • If we're curious and something hasn't been communicated, ...
