Chapter 22. Music Mixdown

There is a common misunderstanding about the music mixdown, namely, that it is the stage in music production where everything that went wrong in the recording session is put right. No doubt this unfortunate notion has been nurtured in recording sessions that have not met expectations, when producers have glibly reassured clients, “Don’t worry, we can fix it in the mix.” The mixdown certainly is very important to the finished product, but keep its significance in perspective.

The mixdown—when all the separately recorded audio tracks are processed, positioned, and combined into stereo or surround sound—cannot change a mediocre performance into a good one, compensate for poor microphone technique, or make a sloppy recording ...
