Most busy people try to reduce things to their simplest terms: yes/no, black/white, etc. When it comes to thinking about whether we have a problem, again it is easiest to think simply—either we do have a problem or we don’t. An added benefit is that if our simple calculation reveals that we don’t have a problem, then we don’t have to do anything about it! See how easy?

But it’s rarely that simple, and there are hidden costs to oversimplifying issues that are actually complex. The issue of substance-use disorders is such a case. This is a relatively new construct; a continuum of substance use from none at all, through harmful use, to addiction. It is much more complicated.
