DNS, DHCP, and IP Addressing – Gaining Deeper Knowledge of Red Hat Linux Networking
In this chapter, we are going to dig deeper into networking. We will discuss Internet Protocol (IP) addressing in two ways: static and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). Static addressing occurs when you set the IP address, such as 192.168.1.10, with a gateway address of 192.168.1.1, whereas with DHCP, the IP information is provided by a DHCP server and the system goes through a handshake mechanism to obtain an IP and the DNS and gateway information on the connected subnet.
