Chapter 20, “Monitoring System Resources,” covered monitoring and tuning system resources, and Chapter 21, “Monitoring and Tuning the Kernel,” discussed monitoring and tuning the kernel, but Part V, “Monitoring and Tuning,” would not be complete without discussing application tuning. Because this is a book for administrators, this chapter explains in detail two programs for tuning applications, OProfile and Valgrind, which can also be beneficial for administrators. It also provides brief overviews of additional application tuning programs for those interested.
