Zeev Neuwirth had no notion of curing the health care delivery system when he first got into medicine. He trained at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Near the end of his residency, in 1989, Neuwirth decided to add a subspecialty in cardiology.
