(1613ML) in 1996 to an estimated 348 million gallons (1317 ML) in 2004. From
the information that is available on the used oil recycling progress in individual
states, it is believed that there have been improvements in the DIY oil changers’
behavior, but little authoritative data is available nationwide. All in all, this is a posi-
tive message and reects the effective programs that have been implemented at the
state and local government levels plus the efforts of the quick lube shops, service
stations, auto dealerships, and used oil collectors/recyclers.
