5.4 FUEL OIL PROPERTIES
Heavy fuel oil can have high levels of contaminant metals, sulfur, and asphaltene
constituents that can lower fuel quality (Chapter 3). Poor quality fuel causes ash foul-
ing, slag, and corrosion. In fact, any property prescribed in a product’s specication
should be related to product performance or of value in the rening or handling of
the product (Martin and Hicks 2010). Specic procedures commonly applied to heat-
ing and power generation fuels and their signicance are varied but must be applied
to assure product quality and suitability for utilization in the designated manner.
