some 0.67 million tonnes (1477 Mlbs.) as unaccounted for and being ille-
gally burned or dumped
The average collection rate in the member states was in the range of 70%
to 75% of the collectible oil, varying considerably from 86% in the United
Kingdom and 85% in Germany, to 47% in Spain and 37% in Greece
In 1999 in the EU, approximately 47% of the used oil went to fuels and
energy recovery, 24% to regeneration of base oils, 28% to illegal burning,
and 1% to disposal
In 1999, the regenerated oil compared with the oil collected in 2000 was
75% in Italy, 65% in Germany, 31% in France, 23% in Greece, and 0% in
the United Kingdom
