On November 5, 2003, Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean got into hot water when he said on the campaign trail, “I still want to be the candidate for guys with Confederate flags on their pickup trucks.”1 The words about the flag were insensitive and poorly chosen, but Dean had an important message: the Democrats cannot win until those guys and gals in the South abandon Bush.
