Chapter 1

Introduction

It is widely believed that, to investigate structural behaviour and reliability for the design of large engineering products such as aircraft or offshore structures, resorting to probabilistic methods is a necessity. However, this fact has only been recognized recently, or to be more accurate, it was only a few decades ago that it became possible to implement probabilistic reliability approaches in engineering practice. This chapter presents a brief history of structural reliability analysis, as well as modern analysis methods and the scope of current research work.
