Future Directions and Reliability Issues

Abstract

This chapter will attempt to address some of these difficult questions. Our road map into the future began in Chapter 1, where the kinds of electronic products that are and will be in demand were considered. Here, feature-scaling trends in device processing will be projected into the future. Both considerations should provide a basis for assessing the growth in applications and capabilities of future electronic products. At some point, however, the apparently unbridled growth of microelectronics will eventually slow as some of the fundamental as well as practical size limitations are approached.
